About Sylvia

"A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language." --W. H. Auden

Sylvia Green  Chatman embraced writing poetry in her late teens when she accepted Christ into her life and converted over from creating secular rap lyrics. She has composed inspirational verse for family, friends, and church members for almost 20 years. She reads her poems at church, literary, and community events. She has published her works in various newsletters, journals, newspapers, and anthologies. She aims to inspire the world with creative excellence.

Single Lifetime

I possess a single lifetime to live.
To the world, I strive my utmost to give.
I aim to shed joy in another’s life--
Attempting to carry peace where lies strife.

I unselfishly spread my love abroad.
My existence, I release from void.
I wish to lead people in the right direction--
 Of positiveness, show a reflection.

I desire to serve my fellow man,
Aiding him in any manner I can.
If I can manage to influence someone,
A significant deed, I shall have done.

In addition to Sylvia's love of rhyme, she also possesses a genuine passion for ensuring that others "look excellent on paper." She discovered her exceptional graphic design abilities a few years after she started penning poems. Her gift of creative communication blossomed when she launched a monthly youth church newsletter, United Youth Digest, at her local church. From there, Sylvia went on to  produce church bulletins, certificates, invitations, bookmarks, etc. until being able to design practically anything printable on paper.

Sylvia polished her natural writing and design ability by studying English Education at Southern University in Baton Rouge and Graphic Communication and Business Office Administration at Louisiana Technical College (now Capital Area Technical College), where she won a gold medal for Advertising in the 2005 SkillsUSA State Championships. She also worked briefly as a Document Creation Specialist for Kinko's Copy Center (now FedEx Kinko's) and as a freelance graphic designer for Greater Baton Rouge Black Pages and Christian Fellowiship Journal. Recently, Sylvia combined both her poetic and graphic abilities together  in her book of poems, Gift of Life: Inspirational Poems and Possess a Vision: Motivational Poems, available on the Books Page and at www.amazon.com.

Among Sylvia's many callings is evangelism. Her pastor ordained her as an evangelist in 2005. Before that, she consecrated as a licensed missionay for 11 years. She accepted Jesus Christ into her life as a teenager. She loves God, knows the Bible, and possesses fervent faith. Her favorite testimony is that "God will keep you if you want to be kept," because God kept her from premarital sex for eight years, from age 15 to  23, until she married. Her favorite scripture is Isaiah 26:3, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." Sylvia is a creative, talented woman who, with God in her life, strives for excellence in all of her endeavor.

"And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know thou art a virtuous woman."  -Ruth 3:11KJV
